Master of Science in
Human Security & Resilience

In this degree program, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the complex human security and resilience challenges that plague communities and mobilize decision- and policymakers. In keeping with the University mission statement, MHSR courses prepare its graduates with the tools required to address complex, 21st century problems in business, government agencies and the military.

First of Its Kind

  • This is the first fully online graduate degree program in Human Security and Resilience.

Unique Learning Opportunity

  • The courses are taught by faculty with vast experience in the relevant disciplines, from environmental security to humanitarian law. Our faculty have consulted for the United Nations Development Program, collaborated with private tech firms on leveraging tech to build resilience and designed resilience plans for large urban areas.

Hands-On Learning

  • Students design a custom Community Resilience Plan based on the National Institute of Standards and Technology Community Resilience Planning Guide in MHSR 550: Resilience Planning and Administration; use FEMA’s Resilience Analysis and Planning Tool (RAPT) to systemically analyze regional resilience across several counties in the United States based on key measures of resilience in MHSR 540: Foundations of Resilience; and in MHSR 515: International Law and U.S. Security Policy, students apply the readings to weekly policy briefs and develop mastery of a current U.S. security policy from the most recent Annual Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community produced by the U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence with a series of podcasts and a focused research paper. Co-ops/internships provide students with practical experience that reinforces the theoretical concepts learned in the classroom.
