Bachelor of Science in
Interdisciplinary Studies
The Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies program responds directly to calls by global corporate leaders for graduates who understand both technology and human beings with the ability to adapt, adjust and advance quickly. Students can design their own program by selecting minors based on their strengths and interests. With an interdisciplinary core, students have a solid foundation in aerospace, management, ethics, communication and global awareness that provides graduates with a unique ability to adapt to shifting market demands and to elevate them into managerial roles.
Strong Career Potential
- Opportunities for rewarding careers in aviation, aerospace, safety, homeland security, applied math, astrophysics, international business, public relations or other related professions. Our students have the third highest salaries in the COAS; Engineering Physics is first, Human Factors is second and Interdisciplinary Studies is third (based on Career Services graduate surveys).
Customizable Program
- Students choose three minors or two minors and a breadth area of 15 credits. With over 40 minors to choose from — including communication and media broadcast, aerospace life sciences, human factors, psychology, homeland security, entrepreneurship and occupational safety — students can customize their degrees where their interests and strengths lie. Excellent for students with transfer credits from dual enrollment or other colleges, they can use them for their breadth area or create a unique focus.
Fast Track Your Success
- We have accelerated program combinations with the MBA program and (coming soon) the Human Factors MS program.
Build a Foundation
- Our core is built upon an aviation/aerospace and management foundation with a global focus; philosophical perspectives; enhanced communication requirement that stresses written, oral and technical writing skills; and a research methods course. It ends with a capstone course of either a thesis, perfect for those wanting to attend graduate school, or a COOP for those who want to earn industry experience.
Notable Careers
- We have had some noteworthy students graduate from our Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) program, including the following:
- Amber S. Gell, a double major in Aerospace Engineering and Interdisciplinary Studies (when it was called Aerospace Studies), is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from President Barack Obama and is the recipient of eight United States Presidential Volunteer Service Awards from Presidents Obama and Bush. Ms. Gell works for Lockheed Martin and NASA in Human Spacecraft Design and Human Performance in Extreme Environments, among other areas. She holds four master's degrees and serves on our College of Arts and Science's Advisory Board. She is able to meet with our IS students when she comes to campus.
- Phil Larson was a 2007 Interdisciplinary Studies graduate (when it was called Aerospace Studies) and is currently the Strategic Planner for the Planetary Science Directorate for NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, but his noteworthy positions have included being the Senior Advisor for Space and Innovation for the Obama White House and the Senior Manager of Communications and Corporate Projects for Space X, working directly with Elon Musk.
